La casa de las flores: Episodio/Episode 17

Episodio 17: Almendra (Despertar)

Episode 17: Almond (Awaken)
Bruno and María José finally arrive in Mexico City and she finds a good purpose to help one of the cabaret’s drag queens with her legal gender issues. She realizes that she can help a lot of people except Paulina herself, who goes on blindly pursuing her misguided goals. Elena confronts Simón during their alternative therapy session at the salon. Later, she visits him at the church and after beating around the bush regarding their issue and how it would be a huge sin to have an intimate relationship with a priest, the two lock lips right there. On the other hand, Claudio is fooling around with the blind Chiquis girl, for whatever reason he might have. Julián turns to prositution due to his financial hardships and discovers along the way how he loves Diego so much. He promises to get back together with him as well as return the family heirloom ring, but it’s no longer in the buried box. Instead, he discovers their mom’s mobile phone which contains photos of her and the Catalán guy whom the siblings have already seen a couple of times.

As dragging as the plot of this show could be it cannot be denied that it will always generate a good kind of buzz because of the issues that it tackles. Every time you have María José there is a reason to highlight timely and socially relevant themes such as the plight of the trans community, for example, even more so in countries like Mexico where the subject remains taboo. Thanks to Netflix’s popularity with mainstream audiences, it is enough to generate a discourse about the topic without coming across as preaching something. In other news, now we know for sure that the Catalan guy is not a long lost brother but rather a lover of Virginia. It seems like poetic justic given the circumstances surrounding the first season but the question now is, perhaps, how to give us a reason to give a damn about it? I don’t understand Claudio’s subplot either. Is he prostituting himself now too or is it a mere fetish?

-Paulina
