Matchbox Concept
Hostel is one of those modern guest houses which have embraced the concept of
pods. What are pods? Well, think of them as a glorified and ultra modern
version of a jail cell, sans the bars. Take KL’s Pods Backpackers, for example.
They just have double bunk beds in a very large room, which seems to be the
norm. Well, Matchbox took the design to a whole new level by aiming for
something that seems similar in structure to Japan’s capsule hotels except
that these ones are actually comfy! I am not familiar with the comfort level in Japanese capsule hotels, though. I have not been in one, but they look weird and cramped, at least in photos.

The room I got was
the mixed dorm, which is their largest. In it were almost ten double bunks or
“pods" as they are called. Do not quote me on these figures. I cannot count. I flunked Math 17, okay. At the middle is a double pod which is the size of a double bed
both above and below. The rest are singles. Inside your bunk you have two
lighting systems, one for your entire pod, and the other, a night lamp. There
are two “windows” by your headboard both with locks. If you want to scare your
neighbor late at night and his window is not locked, you could actually do so.
At your own risk. Lockers are provided inside the room for your belongings.

The cereals at the
pantry are free, along with the Cowhead milk. Oh, you are lactose intolerant? That
is so not my problem. The eggs and the cheese are for sale, though. There is a
lounge at the attic abound with comfy bean bags and board games and guitar
hero and a TV playing Miss Congeniality on DVD and other foreigners who
just would not sleep. The bathrooms are clean and very colorful. I actually got
too attached to them that I wanted to bring them home, but of course
I have heard one too many Customs horror stories for me to even try. Rent?
SGD30 a night. That is already cheap considering how the Maxwell Food Centre is
just around the corner, just like everything else. You are in Chinatown. Hello.

Nice concept. The location is good too! :) We stayed before in a backpackers hostel but it was a bit too far since it was at Jalan Besar.
True, very ideal for backpackers. :)
If you are ever in Singapore again...
Try the Mitraa Hostel in Little India... 10 minute walk to the MRT, near Little India spots and attendants are pinoy...
@Thirdy Lopez - Thanks for the suggestion. Will try that one when I return. :)
that looks cute =)
@pinoydaysleeper - Yep, the concept really is, although I do not recommend the place to people who value privacy because in here they'll get close to none.
These kind of post are always inspiring and I prefer to read quality content so I happy to find many good point here in the post, writing is simply great, thank you for the post
@singapore budget hotels - Thanks! Glad to help. I hope you are not spam though, otherwise I'd look like an idiot again responding to you, haha. ;)
ive stayed at that hostel, actually got more privacy than most hostels i stayed at since their pods are enclosed on all sides except one.
nothing much to complain about with free Spa Esprit stuff, towels, all-day breakfast spread, laundry facilities and free wifi. great location on ann siang too, with the ready availability of chic bars and restaurants which spring to life at night.
@Anonymous - you have a good point about the pods. The location is really good and I really love how close it is to Maxwell's hawker stalls!!! :)
Think this concept was started by Wink hostel first in singapore. they used to be known as habitat hostel. pictures look very comfy!
@Anonymous - Interesting, didn't know that. I guess this is the new "in" thing when it comes to backpacker accommodations. :)
I was in this hostel! I liked everything! all clean and tidy!
I think it's the best proposition for low price! thanks for this!
